If you’ve been struggling with your dandruff lately, and been looking around for solutions to help get control of your dry scalp, the answer might be hiding just a few steps away in your kitchen. Rosemary oil has been a culinary tool for hundreds of years, behind many of our most favourite dishes.

However, did you know it was also an age old remedy to treat itchy scalp, and brittle hair? In fact, rosemary is one of the key medical plants of the mint family, and has a long history of being one of the best natural hair treatments you can use.

Before we explore how rosemary oil can help, it’s best we explore how dandruff becomes a problem in the first place.

Dandruff: The Ins and Outs

You don’t need to be too knowledgeable to spot the signs of dandruff, those pesky flakes covering your clothes, or filling the air in front of your eyes when you itch your head. Yet, dandruff is just a symptom of an underlying problem.

Dandruff flakes are the result of your scalp being irritated. The skin cells on your scalp will begin to shed, leaving them to get caught in your hair, or drift down onto your clothes. There are many reasons why your scalp might be irritated, so let’s explore some of the common ones we face.

Hormonal imbalance is something that occurs at different stages of our life, from our very first days as a baby, all the way up to our golden years. Hormones play a huge role in skin health, which is why you may suddenly be struggling with an irritated scalp as you hit puberty, or as you exit your 20s.

Health Conditions

Many health conditions can directly affect skin health, such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, and much more. On top of this, any health condition that directly affects your immune system, will also have ripple effects on your skin health, which can lead to flaking on the scalp as a result.


There are many environmental factors that can play into your skin health, and by extension, the health of your scalp. These can include pollution levels, smoking, overexposure to sun, and general air quality.


Your lifestyle can also play a large role in your scalp’s health. If you are exposed to high amounts of stress, or have poor diet habits, or are a smoker, these can all directly cause your scalp to become irritated.

Whilst this is not surprising, one of the key factors here is your diet. If you are nutrient deficient in certain key areas, such as zinc, your body won’t have the tools it needs to improve the situation on its own.

Dandruff – The Causes are Complex, the Solution is Simple

It can be frightening to look at all the ways your scalp can become irritated, and feel powerless to point the finger at exactly what is causing your dandruff problem. The reality is, the vast majority of us will fall into one or two of these risk factors regardless.

Despite the complexities behind the cause of an irritated scalp, the result is always the same. Your scalp will begin to produce sebum, which is the body’s way of moisturizing your scalp to try to improve the situation. When this happens, you’ll have a buildup of Malassezia, a bacteria that feeds on sebum. This is what causes your scalp to flake, and then we have dandruff all over your clothes.

Once this process is in full swing, it can be hard to turn back the clock. This is where we turn back around and revisit our old friend Rosemary oil, and apply a safe hair treatment at home you can get started on right away.

Rosemary Oil – The Health Benefits

It is likely you have used rosemary in many forms. The plant, originating from the Mediterranean region, has a range of health benefits and cutlery uses. One common form you will find rosemary is in an oil form, often referred to as an essential oil.

It’s important to note right here, do not put pure rosemary oil on your scalp. In this form, the concentration of the oil is incredibly high, and can actually lead to far more irritation for the skin if you were to place it straight onto the scalp. We’ll cover how to best apply it to helping improve the health of your scalp in a moment.

Before we get there, let’s take a look at the key health related benefits linked to the rosemary plant, and by extension, its oil counterpart.

  • Rosemary contains a phenolic compound called Carnosic Acid, which is a powerful antioxidant. This can help your cells naturally repair themselves, and assist them in fighting damage. By healing the tissue and nerves of the scalp, rosemary can help to restore your skin health.

  • There are countless anti-inflammatory properties linked to rosemary, found in the carnolic acid, oleanolic acid, and bornyl acetate found inside the plant. By applying a strong anti-inflammatory to your scalp, you can ease the destructive cycle taking place.

  • Rosemary oil has proven antifungal properties, fighting at the fungal infection that is often present on dry and irritated scalps.

How to Use Rosemary Oil to Treat your Scalp

If you have rosemary oil in the house, there are many ways you can apply it safely. However, one of the best and most effective is mixing it with coconut oil. This is because coconut oil also carries many helpful properties to improving your skin health.

Simply mix a small amount of rosemary oil, usually one tenth of the total solution, into your coconut oil. Mix well, and apply it to the scalp. Make sure to leave it there for around 30 minutes, and then shampoo and condition afterwards.
